She looked at him, but her pounding heart made it hard for her to hear or register his words. It took her a few seconds to realize what he meant, but his words only increased her fear, and she quickly wished she hadn't heard them at all.
"Don't think this changes anything," she said back spiteful, not willing to accept his good luck. She told herself she didn't need it. She would get through this, just like she had gotten through every situation in the past. His mocking words only made her want to prove him wrong.
"You're still a demon. And next time I see you will be the last," she said sternly, before looking past him down the stairs, making it clear she was waiting for him to move so she could get down as well. The quicker they left, the more chances of survival did she have.
