PostSubject: Pain and Fear   Sun Mar 18, 2012 7:04 am

Miriam had wanted to refuse Sinbad's help, not to show weakness, but she knew he was right, and if she was going to survive in this place, it wouldn't be wise to be stubborn. It was weird how little this place now reminded her of the cathedral she used to visit ever so often.
Nothing looked the same anymore. Everything had changed.
She quickly turned the tap on the sink on, and put her hand under the flowing water, not waiting for it to turn warm.
The ice-cold, hard stream of water made her wound even more painful, and tears were forming in her eyes, but by the time she turned to look at Sinbad, she had blinked them all away and replaced it with a fake smile as she looked around for possible bandages.
She might just have to use some of her clothes, but she would rather not.

When they entered the kitchen, Sinbad started looking for something he could use for the wound. He couldn't find anything to clean the wound with, but he found a cloth that could at least cover it up.
"How did you get hurt?" he asked as he walked over to her with the cloth.

She looked at him surprised, she could not believe he had not seen the huge symbol she had drawn in her own blood by the door.
She was sure he would have noticed that long before he noticed her, but she just shook her head.
"Self-inflicted," she said flatly, but quickly spoke again so he would not misunderstand her.
"I drew a devil's trap by the door, so the demons can't come in.."

"I saw that in front of the door," he said and leaned against the kitchen counter next to her. "I meant what did you use to make the wound? I just wanted to know how huge the risk of it getting infected was. Maybe Frollo has something to disinfect it somewhere."

She held up her bloody iron knife before she put that under the water as well. She didn't want the blood to dry on it and make it harder to use. She liked the knife sharp, so she could defend herself with it if it ever came to that.
Which it probably would...
"I'll be fine, don't worry," she said, looking back towards her hand as she turned the water off. Now she just needed to cover the wound up so it didn't keep bleeding, and she looked around for the cloth Sinbad had just found.
He found him holding it in his hands and gently took it off of him before laying it over her palm.
Really, an infection was the last thing she was worried about right now.

"Oh okay," Sinbad said before he started wrapping the cloth around her wounded hand. He felt his hand shaking lightly, but not so much that it got in the way of putting the cloth around her hand and tie it.
"That should do it."

Sinbad's hands were shaking, and his clumsy hands caused her pain, even if she wasn't going to show it.
He knew he meant well, so she could not make herself get mad at him either, she simply smiled at him.
When she finally looked from her hand to his face, she forced herself to smile kindly.
"Thank you," she said simply. "What's your name?"

She looked at him a bit surprised. Of course she had heard about Sinbad, he was the town's drunk after all.
Weird, the guy didn't seem so bad to her... maybe he was just a really nasty drunk.
"Miriam," she said, still smiling, but her smile was slowly disappearing.
Sighing she looked around the room before turning around, leaning her back against the kitchen counter.
She didn't know what to say to him, or if there was anything to say at all.
"You're quite famous, you know that?" she laughed softly to break the silence.

Sinbad looked away when she spoke again. Of course she would know about that.
"Hmm, yeah," he replied in a low voice. He wasn't quite sure how to reply to that. It's not like it was anything to be proud of, quite the contrary.

She shrugged when she noticed his reaction.
"You don't seem so bad," she said to cheer him up a little bit, as she put her knife into her bag once again. She wouldn't want to loose it, or anything else. Everything she carried was important to her. Loosing just one item could be the difference between life and death.
"What did you get?" she asked as to change the subject, nodding to the little bag he was carrying himself.

Sinbad liked the topic chance. It was at least better than talking about his past. He lifted his bag a little. "A water bottle, some salt, a exorcism spell and an iron knife," he said as he pictured the objects before his eyes. "What about you?"

"The same," she said. "Just don't have a waterbottle," she sighed. That sure could become a problem, but she was determined to get through it. After all, there was tons of water in the rectory that she could get when she became thirsty.
It just meant she would have to return to the rectory a lot...
"I guess we were the lucky ones," she said and smiled at him.
"Frollo didn't have many of those knives," she said, remembering watching him once he handed them out.

"No, they an really come in handy," he said while feeling the knife inside the bag.
"But it's hard to believe that we might have to defend ourselves against demons soon."
He stared at his bag for a while. "Did you know that such things existed?" he asked, referring to the demons.

"No," she said and sighed. Honestly, it still felt hard to believe, but she had to.
"But I suppose if demons are real... God must be real too right?" she said and looked at him with a weak smile. She found some kind of comfort thinking like this. One side could not exist without the other, or so she chose to believe.

Sinbad was a little surprised when she brought god into it. He hadn't even thought about that before now. He still wasn't sure if he could really believe in god, but maybe she was right.
"Yeah, maybe," he said. there was no reason to prevent the girl from believing, even if he found it hard to believe himself. Even if God did exist, Sinbad doubted they'd get any help from this front. Somehow he just felt like they wer all alone in this mess.
"I'm not even sure what to think about these creatures. I mean Frollo did tell us about them. But meeting them for real must be much different than just hearing about them."

She had seen them from afar, she doubted anyone hadn't noticed at least one of them but...
She was sure he was right. Seeing them up close must be far worse. From afar they just looked like humans after all.
"Are you scared?" she asked him teasingly with a crooked smile. She knew she was, even if she wouldn't show it.

Sinbad pushed himself gently away from the kitchen counter and started walking around.
He laughed slightly at her question. "Yeah, I mean who wouldn't be." He turned around as he walked, facing her. "But we'll get through this... somehow," he said to reassure both her and himself. They had to get through it. They couldn't just give up.

She nodded at him as he spoke. She would not go down easily, and she thought she had already proven that.
If the demons were to win, then so be it. But she would fight them with her last breath. She would sure give them hell while she could.
"Just don't loose that knife," she said, looking at his bag. It could get him out of a lot of trouble if he just held on to it.

Sinbad's grip around his bag got tighter. "The same to you," he said while nodding towards her bag.
Sinbad wasn't sure if it was his imagination or if the room had gotten warmer. At least it felt like that way to him, but he did his best not to show it.
"Maybe it would be a good idea to fill the bottle," he said to himself before he found the bottle in the bag and walked towards the bucket next to the sink. It was good to have in case anything happened.

She nodded again. She didn't speak much, mostly because she had nothing to say.
"Are you planning on heading out already?" she asked as he filled his waterbottle.
It was either that, or he was just thinking ahead. Either way she didn't like thinking about it.
As long as she stayed inside the rectory it was all hypothetical. It was only a mere thought.
As soon as she stepped outside, it would be come a reality... and admitting it or not, she had never been this scared.

Sinbad started filling the bottle.
"No, but I wouldn't end up in a situation where I wished I had filled it already. So better do it now," he said before he put the lid back on the bottle.
"What do you plan on doing now?"

"Waiting," she answered him shortly as she moved to the doorway, where she could see the entrance to the rectory.
If any demon was to enter, she wanted to be prepared for it. Someone needed to stay here, right? Keep an eye on it?
"No use trapping a demon if it gets away right?" she asked with a slight, fake smile on her face.

"You are right," as he watched her move to the doorway. "Be careful, and good luck with trapping a demon."

If she were to be honest, she was hoping she wouldn't. Facing a demon, even inside a trap would be scary.
However, she knew it would be for the best if she did. One demon less to worry about if she could just do it right.
She tightened the grip on her bag with the exorcism spell in it and concentrated on how she would do it once she caught one.
"What if I do it wrong..?" she mumbled softly, mostly to herself, but was quickly embarrased once she realized Sinbad was in hearing-range. She didn't want to look weak in front of him after all.
"Thank you," she said, louder, hoping he hadn't heard her the first time.
